SUPPORT, ADVOCACY, AND PROFESSIONAL LEARNING FOR THE K-12 HUMAN RESOURCE PROFESSIONAL
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MESSAGE
Hello everyone!
Sorry it has been a couple weeks since I last sent out a WSPA this week! With the June calendar comes the culminating event and the ultimate reason we are all in this business....Graduation! To see the hard work you do each and every day come to a conclusion every year with students moving on to the next grade and seniors graduating brings such a sense of accomplishment. It is a very busy time of the year for all HR departments, but it is important to take a moment to reflect on the reason we do what we do. Thank you for your dedication and hard work in each and every one of your Districts!
Twenty-Three years ago, the leaders in WSPA came up with an initial plan to help develop future leaders within the state's school district human resource departments and developed the Human Resources Educational Leadership Program (HELP). Although the program has changed and expanded over those twenty-three years, the main premise has remained constant...developing human resource leaders. The twenty-fourth HELP series is being held in Leavenworth again this year and it will run from July 10-14. If you have not attended a previous HELP session, please take a serious look at the offerings below and consider attending one of the sessions.
As many of you may already be aware, WSPA works closely with WASA in developing a Legislative Platform and obtains reports as the Legislature is in session. We are currently working with WASA and other associations in developing our 2024 Legislative Platform and I am looking for input from WSPA members as to concerns and priorities so I can share them with the committee. If you have ideas/concerns, please forward them to me soon.
Our WSPA board will meet in the middle of July to develop our budget and activities for the 2023-24 year and if you have ideas or concerns you want to bring up, either email Jane Stencel, our outgoing President and Professional Development Coordinator, me, or our incoming President, Doug Christensen. Our email addresses are listed below.
Doug Christensen, Assistant Superintendent at Kennewick SD; WSPA President 2023-24: doug.christensen@ksd.org
Jane Stencel, Executive Director at East Valley SD; WSPA President 22-23; WSPA Professional Development Coordinator: stencelj@evsd.org

Unemployment Insurance: Sign up now for upcoming SOC code webinars
Learn more about Standard Occupational Classification codes on May 20 or June 3
Do you have questions about Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) codes? Sign up for one of our upcoming webinars!
All employers will be required to report SOC codes when they submit their quarterly tax reports starting with their fourth quarter 2022 report. At that time, you could get a penalty for incorrect SOC reporting. Reporting SOC codes is currently optional and is available only to single filers.
Upcoming webinars
If you have questions or want to learn more about using SOC codes, register for one of our free webinars.
During these webinars, we’ll talk about:
- What are SOC codes?
- When are SOC codes mandatory?
- How to look up SOC codes.
- How to add SOC codes with keyed or imported wage data.
Note: We will provide the same information in both webinars. However, questions could vary in each webinar, so you are welcome to sign up for both.
What is SOC?
SOC is a federal coding system that helps government agencies and private businesses compare occupational data.
In 2019, the Washington State Legislature passed a law requiring employers to report SOC codes in their quarterly reports for unemployment insurance.

- Try out the SOC code search tool. Under “Occupation Keyword Search” you can search by keyword, SOC code or industry.
